The new-look Tulip Garden located in the foothills of the Zabarwan range overlooking the Dal Lake was thrown open to visitors on Sunday. Even as the garden opened with added attractions, including a fountain channel and hyacinth terrace, the beauty of myriad tulip varieties was also streamed live through drone cameras on the social media.
And as the garden bustled with visitors on the opening day, causing traffic jams in the vicinity, stakeholders remain hopeful that it will augur well for the tourism sector.
“We had actively promoted the Tulip Garden on the social media this year and we received an overwhelming response today from both locals as well as tourists. From 8 am onwards, we have been receiving visitors and nearby roads have been jammed alongside queues of people waiting to get inside the garden. The beauty of the garden was also caught on drone cameras and the same was streamed live on our Facebook page to woo more tourists,” said Director, Tourism, Kashmir, Mahmood Ahmad Shah.
The garden was officially inaugurated by Floriculture Minister Javaid Mustafa Mir, who said they were hopeful that the garden would draw a good number of tourists to the Valley. “This (garden) is one of the most attractive activity that draws tourists in large numbers. Even yesterday, 1,200 tourists had come here. God willing, it will be a very good (tourism) season this year,” Mir said.
Consultant for the garden, Javed Ahmad Shah said the garden would see a bloom of over 12 lakh flowers. Besides different varieties of tulips, Shah said a fountain channel and hyacinth terrace were the new attractions. He said daffodils, narcissus and other ornamental plants were also on display. The Tulip Garden, formerly known as Siraj Bagh, was first opened to public in 2008. Besides tourists and locals, the garden has also attracted several shooting crews of the film and TV industry.
